Practical 3: Critical Analysis of Textbooks

This practical consisted on 3 different parts:

Part 1:

For this part, we had to: choose one of the three levels of the book Made in Corrientes, choose either the page from the book called Project English 1 or the one from the book called Flashlight 1, and we also had to work with the book Cuadernos de Trabajo para el Aula de Inglés. Once we had made our choices, we had to solve the following activities in order to analyze each book:
  1. Find publication details: author/s, year, publishing companyanalz, kind of distribution for materials. Use APA citation.
  2. Choose an activity from each textbook; mention pages. Describe the activities in detail and analyse them critically bearing in mind the theoretical background provided till now.
  3. What view of English language teaching does each textbook represent?
  4. How are learners’ identities regarded?
  5. Which variety of English is taught? Why?
  6. Is there a monolingual or plurilingual perspective present in the textbook?
  7. What is the role of culture as presented in the activities?

Part 2:

For this part, we had to read the theory on Harmer (2016) and the materials from Made in Corrientes and Project 1 (Oxford) and then choose a unit from each of them in order to solve the following activities:
  1. How are grammar, lexis, functions and pronunciation presented in each of them?
  2. Which presentation seems to be more adequate to teach English in state schools and which at private institute level? Which variables would you consider for each of these contexts?

Part 3:

For this part we were supposed to study the theory about motivaton and then decide:
  • What can we do to enhance motivation in young learners studying English at  primary school level?

Practical finished:

I completed this practical together with Valentina Molina, and you can see the final version of our work by clicking on this link:
